IRS CP80 Notice: Credit on Tax Account But Missing Tax Return

IRS CP80 Notice: Credit on Tax Account But Missing Tax Return

The IRS sends a CP80 notice when you have a credit on your tax account and your tax return is missing for the tax period specified on your IRS CP80 notice. You risk losing your refund for that tax year if you fail to file your return within three years from its original due date.

In addition, receiving a CP80 notice and not filing taxes may lead to a tax audit or impact your rights to appeal.

Why Did I Receive an IRS CP80 Notice?

You’ll receive a CP80 notice from the IRS after they apply payments or other credits to your tax account and they don’t have your tax return. Note that you may receive a CP80 if you sent your return but the IRS didn’t receive it or hasn’t processed it.

What Steps Should I Take After I Receive an IRS CP80 Notice?

When you receive a CP80 notice from the IRS:

  • Review your CP80 and confirm the IRS credit. You can either call the IRS or review your tax account online.
  • If you didn’t file taxes yet, complete your tax return ASAP and mail it to the address in your CP80.
  • If you already filed taxes, you’ll need to sign another copy of the return you sent and mail it to the address at the top of your CP80.
  • You have the option to apply your credit amount to a different tax account if you have more than one.

How Much Time Do I Have to File a Missing Tax Return After I Receive an IRS CP80 Notice?

You’re expected to file your return within three years from the date it was due, including extensions. If you fail to file in that window, you will lose your refund for the missing tax year, even if you eventually file your return at a later date. Therefore, it’s best to file your missing return as soon as you receive the CP80 notice.

Where Do I Send My Missing Tax Return Once I Complete It?

Once you complete and sign your tax return, send it to the address included at the top of your IRS CP80 notice.

What Do I Do If I Receive an IRS CP80 Notice But Already Filed My Tax Return?

If you filed a tax return but still received a CP80, simply sign and date a copy of your original return and mail it to the address specified in your IRS CP80 notice.

Will I Lose My Refund?

You will lose your refund if you fail to file taxes within the required 3-year period from the original due date. When you miss this deadline, the IRS won’t issue your tax refund. Keep in mind that three years starts from the date your return was due and not the date you receive the CP80 notice.

What IRS Phone Number Do I Call If I Have Questions?
