Can You Respond to an IRS Notice Using the IRS Document Upload Tool?

Can You Respond to an IRS Notice Using the IRS Document Upload Tool?

How Does the IRS Document Upload Tool Work?

With the document upload tool, taxpayers can quickly upload and submit documents to the IRS instead of mailing them. You will first need to create an online IRS account before using this tool if you do not already have one.

The types of documents you can upload to the IRS include W-2 and 1099 forms, explanatory letters, identity verification statements, and power of attorney.

Keep in mind that you cannot file a tax return using the IRS document upload tool.

A key benefit of the document upload tool is that users will receive immediate confirmation from the IRS that the uploaded document has been received.

Note that the IRS reviews uploaded documents and responds via mail. They will not post a response to your IRS account and will never email or call you about uploaded documents.

Which IRS Notices Qualify for the Document Upload Tool?

The IRS document upload tool is for submitting documents in response to specific notices or requests for information. Not all IRS notices are eligible for document upload and the list of ones that qualify can change based on IRS protocols.

Here are the current IRS notices eligible for responses via the document upload tool:

CP2000 Notice

Sent when the information the IRS receives from third parties differs from the taxpayer’s reported income on their tax return.

CP75 Notice/CP75A Notice

Sent to ask for more documentation to verify an individual taxpayer’s eligibility for tax credits and/or deductions.

Notice of Deficiency

Sent when the IRS determines that a taxpayer “has a deficiency” after reviewing a tax return. Taxpayers can upload supporting documents to dispute this deficiency.

Notice of Audit

Sent to ask taxpayers under audit for documents associated with specific items in question on a tax return.

Identity Verification

Sent when the IRS needs to verify a taxpayer’s identity. They may request copies of a passport, ID card, or other identification. Taxpayers can upload IDs directly to the IRS via the document tool.

What Do You Need to Verify Your Identity to Upload Documents to the IRS?

Taxpayers will need to provide an SSN or ITIN number, date of birth, full legal name, and current mailing address. The mailing address must match the address for the most recent tax return.

You may have to upload a copy of your ID, like your driver’s license or passport, to verify your identity.

Depending on your reason for the upload, you might also have to include information about your return, such as your filing status, your adjusted gross income from your prior year’s return, or other specific personal tax information.

Does Submitting Documents and Responses to Notices via the IRS Upload Tool Mean Faster Refunds and Resolution of Tax Issues?

Submitting documents via the upload tool may expedite the resolution of some tax issues and refunds. However, that is not always the case.

Here is how using the document upload tool can affect IRS document processing:

  • Since electronic submission is faster than mail, the IRS may be able to resolve your case faster if you upload requested documents with the IRS document upload tool.
  • Prompt document submission can help you avoid refund delays. However, the timing of your refund is related to the accuracy of your return, the ability of the IRS to process it, and any issues or errors they find.
  • In complex tax cases or audits, it could take longer to resolve the issue regardless of which method of document submission is used. You may be required to provide the IRS with additional information, and the IRS may need to contact you or your authorized representative for resolution.
